5. Consequences of reducing water use in paper mills

The regulatory landscape is therefore evolving towards encouraging users to make better use of water resources. Industry, and in particular the paper industry, is largely concerned by this water policy, which encourages sites to aim for minimum water consumption and reduced impact of discharges into the natural environment.

5.1 Benefits of reducing water use in paper mills

The advantages are as follows:

  • economic benefits: while the major economic benefit in the 1960s was the saving of raw materials, today it is the reduction in costs due to the lower volume of water used (pumping, clean water treatment and effluent treatment costs), combined with a reduction in energy requirements;
