5. Water for human consumption
5.1 Catchments or abstraction works
According to BIPE 2019 , there are 33,200 groundwater and surface water extraction facilities in mainland France. A few facilities draw on seawater to produce drinking water by reverse osmosis desalination.
The origin of the water is either groundwater, surface water or both (mixed). Groundwater, which is of better quality than surface water, is mainly abstracted (around 2/3).
