1.1 Sediments in France and their regulations

The annual volume of sediment removed from harbours and rivers in France is estimated at 50 million m 3 . Anthropogenic activities adjacent to these structures have, in some cases, contaminated sediments with both organic pollutants (hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), etc.) and inorganic pollutants (metals and metalloids).
