 INTRODUCTION

Summary

The maintenance of waterways, ports, canals, etc. generates millions of tonnes of polluted sediment every year. Treatment solutions do exist, but do not always enable optimized sediment management. One of the conventional processes is physical treatment, which is currently facing a technological hurdle when it comes to treating the fine fraction of sediments (< 80 μm).

In response to this problem, an innovative process for treating the fine fraction of sediments has been developed. It uses a technology that has been tried and tested in the mining sector, but unknown in the environmental field: centrifugal gravimetric separation.

Abstract

Maintaining rivers, harbours, canals, etc., annually generates millions of tons of polluted sediments. Current processes for the treatment of these sediments are mainly based on their physical properties in order to separate polluted particles from non-polluted ones. However, these physical processes are faced to a technological bottleneck for treating the fine fractions of sediment (lower than 80 μm) and then for sustainable management of sediments. In order to address this problem, an innovative process was developed. It is based on a technology frequently used in the mining area, but unknown by the environmental field actors: the centrifugal gravity separation.
