3. Local impacts: health risks
Pollution in the vicinity (close to emission sources) of urban or industrial facilities is mainly a health hazard, although the impact on architectural heritage and property is not to be overlooked. The effects of high levels of pollution, such as were encountered in the 1950s and 1970s, are no longer encountered today.
four thousand deaths were attributed to the London smog of 1954, when SO 2 levels exceeded 2,000 µg / m 3 (compare with the current guide values recommended by the WHO in table 3 ).
