5. Atmospheric management

Many of the provisions of French air quality legislation transpose or reinforce European environmental directives. In particular, they lay down :

  • ambient air limit values for various pollutants;

  • the quality of fuels and discharges from various sources of pollution;

  • national emission ceilings to be respected by member states.

5.1 National level

At national level, the Ministry of the Environment is responsible for drawing up and implementing regulations on ambient air quality. Local regulations are enforced by the prefects, with technical support from the government's decentralized departments (notably the DRIRE regional directorates...
