Call

Ordinary means of appeal by which a person who is dissatisfied with a judgment handed down by a court of first instance asks a court of higher jurisdiction - the court of appeal - to re-examine the case in fact and in law. The person making the appeal is the appellant. The person against whom the appeal is lodged is the respondent. Since January 1 2001, it has been possible to lodge an appeal against an Assize Court verdict. The case is then re-examined in fact and in law by a new assize court.
