7. Glossary – Definitions
Call
Ordinary means of appeal by which a person who is dissatisfied with a judgment handed down by a court of first instance asks a court of higher jurisdiction - the court of appeal - to re-examine the case in fact and in law. The person making the appeal is the appellant. The person against whom the appeal is lodged is the respondent. Since January 1 2001, it has been possible to lodge an appeal against an Assize Court verdict. The case is then re-examined in fact and in law by a new assize court.
Stop
Synonymous with judgment. This legal term designates the judicial decision handed down by the courts of appeal, administrative courts of appeal, investigating chambers, assize courts, the Court of Cassation and the Council of State.
