  • Offence classes and contraventions

In criminal law, offenses are behaviors strictly prohibited by criminal law and punishable by a penalty stipulated by the law. Criminal offenses are classified, in descending order of seriousness, as felonies, misdemeanors and infractions.

Contraventions are offences punishable by a fine not exceeding 3,000 euros.

There are five classes of contraventions, each with a different maximum fine:

  • 38 euros maximum for 1 re class;

  • 150 euros maximum for 2nd class ;

  • 450 euros maximum for those in 3rd class;

  • 750 euros maximum for 4th class offences;
