It is difficult to estimate the overall mycotoxin contamination of cereal batches. Most surveys focus on a limited number of samples and, above all, a limited number of years. Batch characterization is often imprecise, and information on whether or not batches were cleaned before analysis is often missing.

The representativeness of the samples taken from the batches studied is not always guaranteed, as mycotoxins are generally heterogeneously distributed within the same batch . Mycotoxin analysis is fraught with considerable uncertainty, as levels are often low.
