4. Variable inductively coupled sensors

Sensors with variable inductance belong to the category of inductive sensors. This category also includes sensors with a variable-coupling transformer, such as the differential transformer, microsyn, inductive potentiometer, synchrodetector, resolver and inductosyn, which are the subject of this section.

4.1 Differential transformer

The differential transformer, also known as LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer), is widely used because of its advantages, which are :

  • a wide range of measurement ranges (from a few millimeters to a few tens of centimeters);

  • good linearity, very fine resolution, and operation without any mechanical connection between the fixed and moving...
