In recent years, developments in image sensors have made it possible to achieve high spatial resolutions with temporal acquisition rates of several thousand images per second. Currently, it is possible to record 512 GB in on-board memory, at a rate of 75,000 images/s (fps) of one megapixel each (Phantom TMX 7510, Vision Research). But it's also possible to record 4K images (4,096 x 2,304 pixels) at 1,250 fps (Fastcam Nova, Model R5-4K, Photron).

The internal or external interfacing architecture of the cameras is decisive in ensuring transfer rates for data volumes that can become very high. While the fastest internal cameras can reach speeds of up to 75 Gpix/s, this can vary externally for the same sensor. Externally, it can vary for the same sensor, depending on its interfacing (see table 2 )....
