Choosing the right lighting system is a delicate yet crucial stage in the success of an application. It is difficult to define an exact methodology that will lead to the ideal solution, and this stage therefore requires several experiments. The device chosen must highlight the areas to be studied, in order to facilitate downstream processing and increase its efficiency and speed. It must be perfectly controlled and, in most cases, protected from ambient light.

After presenting the light sources used in machine vision, this first part describes the lighting techniques that can be implemented, before giving some selection criteria.
