4. Hardware aspects

4.1 General

CAN (and CAN-FD) is an open network in the sense that several products from different manufacturers can coexist on the same media. CAN (and CAN-FD) components fall into several categories:

  • independent but non-autonomous CAN controller: component managing the CAN protocol, designed to interface with a microcontroller-type programmable system;

  • microcontroller with CAN controller "single chip solution": a microcontroller integrating (fused with) one or more CAN controllers;

  • stand-alone independent controller (SLIO = serial link input/output): a stand-alone component incorporating a CAN controller, designed for remote input/output, and intended for remote control of sensors...
