3. CAN-FD specifications

3.1 General

After 30 years of use in the automotive and industrial sectors, the CAN bus needed to evolve its characteristics: now it has, with CAN-FD (CAN flexible data rate). This technological evolution should extend the life of the CAN bus.

Without this development, it's likely that other buses would have replaced it in the automotive sector within a few years at least. Other communication buses have already entered the fray, but as deployment is not as straightforward, CAN-FD enables a smooth transition.

Today's automobiles are equipped with a host of communicating electronic devices (on-board systems). This equipment is multiplying as automakers focus on improving comfort and safety, as well as minimizing pollution and fuel consumption....
