1. General
In order to describe and classify the different modes of detection, it is necessary to briefly recall the general principles of detection, inherent to ion exchange chromatography. Let's consider the general case of the exchange of an analyte M n+ by an eluent cation E x+ , assuming that the injected solution has been prepared in eluent and that M n+ and E x+ are associated with the same anion X – . The analyte progresses through the column by ion exchange. Ions present in the stationary phase are highlighted to differentiate them from those present in the mobile phase.
