6. Conclusion
Most of the detectors used in liquid chromatography can be used in ion chromatography, sometimes with post-column adjustments to the nature of the chromatographic eluent, to make it compatible with the detection mode. In addition to these detectors, some have been specifically developed and optimized for ion chromatography. This is the case with conductimetric detection, usually combined with an ion suppression device.
Technical advances in both detectors and suppression devices are constantly being added to the literature, enabling us to significantly reduce the signal-to-noise ratio of this detection mode, and today achieve excellent detection limits.
UV-visible absorption with or without post-column derivatization appears to be a complementary option to conductimetry, due to the close detection limits when colored complexes are formed...
