6. Conclusion
In conclusion, this chapter has demonstrated the potential applications of electron energy loss spectrometry. EELS spectrometry is used as a complementary technique to ESCA and Auger spectrometry for chemical analysis of material surfaces. In addition, HREELS spectrometry, which has recently benefited from the development of high-performance spectrometers, is well suited to the study of chemical reactions at the surface of solid materials. However, despite its considerable scientific output in the field of fundamental research, HREELS spectrometry has not, to our knowledge, yet demonstrated any real potential for industrial applications, such as the development of heterogeneous-phase catalysts. To date, it remains a technique reserved for specialized research laboratories.
