With 10.2 million square kilometers, France has the second largest maritime area in the world, behind the United States and ahead of Australia, Russia and the United Kingdom (figure 1 ). The control and surveillance of this maritime space, spread across all the world's oceans, represents an economic, strategic and ecological challenge for France.
