ABSTRACT

The tramway, be it for urban, tourism or goods transportation, almost disappeared from the urban landscape of certain countries such as France and Spain. However, at the technical, economic and practical level, it remains generally superior to the traditional metro and other means of transportation. This article focuses on the various fields of use of the tramway as well as on its advantages and drawbacks. It also describes the constraints linked to the infrastructures and the operating mode of this means of transportation such as its integration into the urban fabric, security rules, driving mode, signaling, repairing breakdowns, etc.

 INTRODUCTION

This study, divided into 3 successive articles, first explains how this mode of transport almost disappeared completely from the urban landscape of certain countries, such as France, Great Britain and Spain, under pressure from the automobile lobby and in the absence of a considered vision of a long-term policy for moving people, in favor of a desire to give absolute priority to automobile traffic.
