Natural gas is afossil energypresent worldwide in important volume and from which proved resources are increasing day after day. This energy is used obviously asfuel for industrial application as well as fuel for transportation. Whatever its application, this hydrocarbon fuel shows interesting properties that make itan interesting alternative in the context of energy diversification as well as for completing the offer to conventional fuels.
After a brief introduction of natural gas as a fossil energy source, a description of natural gas in terms of composition and associated properties is made, Then the impact of these properties on the fuel-related expectations of motorists are discussed.

INTRODUCTION
Natural gas is a fossil fuel whose resources are substantial and whose proven reserves are steadily increasing. It has a natural place as a fuel for industrial and transportation applications. Whatever its field of application, this hydrocarbon offers specific advantages that make it a strategic alternative both in the search for viable energy diversification, and in expanding the supply of conventional liquid fuels.
This article, divided into two parts
After a brief presentation of natural gas as a fossil fuel, its composition and physico-chemical characteristics will be analyzed and compared with the expectations of engine manufacturers.
An analysis of the different technological approaches currently in use, and of possible future developments, is then presented in the article "Natural gas – Vehicle fuel"
