11. Sobriety and energy efficiency
In developed countries, energy is cheap in relation to people's income. As a result, this resource is often used without trying to save it, except in industry, which is often a model in this area. It was only during energy crises, such as the oil crisis of the 1970s, that efforts were made to save energy. These were soon swept aside by the oil counter-shock and a return to cheap oil. We are now entering a world where energy will become increasingly expensive. So we're going to have to change our behavior, become sober and use energy sources as efficiently as possible. This will become all the more necessary as renewable energies are sources of low energy density.
Sobriety and energy efficiency are two different but complementary things. Being energy-efficient means, for example, switching off the light when leaving a room empty, or walking to the bakery 300 m away...
