6. Revolution in tissue engineering and additive manufacturing
Modern implantology took off in the 1980s, thanks to the material titanium and its alloys. Work on osseointegration, to optimize the durability and biosafety of these dental implants, has led to the development of various surface treatments. Controlling surface roughness and wettability is essential to make implant surfaces hydrophilic, where bone reconstruction must take place. However, new strategies are being developed in line with market trends and the socio-economic contexts of different parts of the world. These include innovation and broadening the range of implants. The aim is to counter growing competition from entry-level manufacturers with higher value-added products.
