4. Application properties of refractory ceramics
To assess the suitability of a refractory ceramic for a given application, it is necessary to know the material's characteristics and assess their impact on in-service behavior. This complex and difficult process often leads to compromises between different material properties, particularly mechanical strength and corrosion resistance; hence the need for overall optimization, which justifies the use of a wide variety of refractory ceramics.
Knowing the material's properties for use means first and foremost knowing its raw materials. Indeed, by the very nature of its manufacturing process, a refractory retains the memory of its raw materials.
Chemical composition, open porosity (pore volume and size distribution) and the arrangement of the various constituents are important characteristics in corrosion and impregnation by liquids and gases...
