13. Specific characteristics of greases

By way of example, table 7 gives an example of an EPEXELF grease data sheet (Elf doc.), which shows typical average characteristics and performance of these greases for highly loaded components.

13.1 Consistency, penetration

The consistency of a grease can be defined as its resistance to deformation, and is assessed by measuring penetration. The test consists in measuring, at 25°C, the penetration of a conical plunger of given shape and mass into the grease, after a period of 5 s. The penetration is expressed in tenths of a millimeter.
