8. Corrosion resistance

In the field of lubrication, a distinction is usually made between moisture corrosion of ferrous metals (rust formation) and acid attack corrosion of non-ferrous metals, particularly copper.

Good anti-rust properties are required for most applications; they are assessed either by laboratory tests, the best known of which is the NF T 60-151/ASTM D 665/ISO 7120 anti-rust protection test carried out for 24 h at 60°C in the presence of distilled water (method A) or synthetic seawater (method B), or by tests carried out on mechanisms:

  • sequence ll D test on Oldsmobile 5.7L V6 engine (ASTM-STP 315H part I) ;

  • CRC L-33 wet corrosion test on hypoid bridge (ASTM-STP 512 A/ FTMS 791C, method 5326.1).
