11. Mechanical properties and characteristics

This area of lubricant performance, also known as lubricity, covers a range of properties such as friction, anti-wear, extreme pressure and mechanical shear resistance.

11.1 Friction properties

Friction properties are defined as :

  • the magnitude of the friction coefficient, force or torque on which friction losses depend, directly, and therefore the mechanical efficiency of the machine, and indirectly, the heating of components and lubricants. It is therefore important to reduce friction in order to save energy and extend lubricant life. This can be achieved in two ways:
