4. Passivation of reinforcement in sound concrete

4.1 Reinforcement before placing in concrete

Reinforcing bars leaving the factory are coated with a layer of adherent scale. They are then stored on site prior to installation and insertion into the concrete. They then oxidize, and the porous oxidation layer (figure 11 ) is penetrated during casting by the cement solution towards the metal surface, where passivation or corrosion reactions take place.
