8. Conclusion

The basic mechanisms of steel corrosion in concrete are now fairly well understood. What remains to be clarified is the effect of certain concrete constituents and exposure conditions, such as industrial environments.

Modeling, the aim of which is to understand and predict the behavior of structures, in order to define sizing, maintenance or repair strategies, is being developed by mechanics, transfer mode specialists and electrochemists alike. The avenues being explored are :

  • corrosion initiation ;

  • the time it takes for the first disorders (cracks or splinters) to appear;
