ABSTRACT

Although new developments are still expected, over the last few years the implementation of new measurement, automation, maintenance management, refractory repair, planning and mixed refining technologies has allowed for a significant improvement of steel conversion. This article is dedicated to describing the practice and control of all the operations in connection with the process of steel conversion. The specific technology of the equipment used is presented: blow, lance, nozzle converters and converters using inert gas mixing. The article ends by detailing the parameters which must be taken into account when setting up and building a steel oxygen plant.

 INTRODUCTION

Steel mills for converting cast iron into steel are studied and described in the [M 7 650v2] file and this one. The [M 7 650v2] dossier describes the various conversion processes, the raw materials used, and the physical chemistry of refining. It also provides a history of the development of steelmaking processes in general, and cast-iron refining processes in particular.

In addition, see [Doc. M 7 650v2] for trends in annual crude steel production worldwide and in China, as well as the share of each production process.

Here, the reader will find :

  • a description of the practice and control of operations ;

  • a study of the parameters determining converter productivity and some data on the various components of the cost price;

  • A description of specific technologies for converters with lance blowing, nozzles and inert gas mixing;

  • a final section devoted to engineering.
