2. National regulations

2.1 Preventing soil pollution

Polluted sites and soils are not covered by a specific legal framework, but are mainly governed by the legislation on classified facilities, in particular Book V – of the French Environment Code. . Soil pollution prevention by the inspectorate of classified facilities needs to be improved. Today, soil condition monitoring is essentially confined to the start-up and cessation of site activity, with vigilance focused mainly on facilities identified as at risk in the regulations.
