Europe's strategic objective is to achieve "no net land take" by 2050, i.e. the elimination of any net increase in the surface area of artificial land. The way we currently use land and soil in Europe is unsustainable, and has a considerable impact on life on earth. .
At present, the EU's strategic objective is a long way off, as agricultural land and semi-natural areas continue to give way to cities, commercial and industrial sites.
