2. Implementation

The processing of magnesium alloys is influenced by the physical and chemical properties of the base metal and some of the additive elements. The low density of magnesium and its affinity for oxygen play a decisive role at the temperatures reached by the liquid metal.

2.1 Merger

The vapour pressure of magnesium at its melting temperature does not allow proper vacuum melting. The two most widely used methods for protecting the metal during melting and holding in the liquid state are flux protection and atmosphere protection. Atmospheric protection (fluxless melting) is now much more widely used. This is the recommended protection, as it eliminates the risk of corrosion resistance being impaired by flux pollution.
