1. Metallurgical principles of smelting

The main alloying elements used to characterize cast iron are carbon, silicon, manganese, sulfur and phosphorus. Alloying elements are deliberately introduced to obtain the specific properties required: carbide stability, corrosion resistance, machinability, etc.

Remember that carbon, silicon and phosphorus are very often considered together in a fictitious title called equivalent carbon :
