The medical field mainly uses open-structure foams, mainly based on titanium or tantalum, for implant applications.

7.1 The benefits of foams

Metal foams have the advantage over the base material of providing adjustable and controllable porosity in terms of cell size and shape. This makes it possible to predict and adjust the insert's mechanical resistance, and to choose cell parameters that encourage colonization by natural bone.

The advantage of the implant over natural organ transplantation techniques is that it does not require immunosuppressive treatment.
