5. Ash classification by product type

5.1 Ash classification by fuel and process

The various products resulting from the combustion of coal in thermal power plants can be distinguished according to the nature of the fuels consumed, hard coal or lignite, as well as the different power plant production processes:

  • boiler type (conventional flame or CFL) ;

  • whether or not to use primary desulphurization in a conventional furnace ;

  • where the ashes are collected (CV for fly ash, CF or CL for hearth or bed ash).

This leads to the 5 main categories of fly ash shown in the table 1 .
