1.1 CW and direct-modulated laser sources

Laser sources are the main components forming the optical carrier; they are either used in continuous mode or modulated by the microwave signal used for amplitude modulation. The list of transmitting components is limited to sources used in optical links operating at microwave frequencies, or in microwave signal generation, i.e. components with bandwidth or noise performance compatible with applications in the microwave domain (table 1 ).
