1. Physical aspects
Recording the relief of an object involves recording the phase of the light wave that encounters the object. And recording the phase of a wave is done by interferometry, i.e. by superimposing a reference light wave on the wave coming from the object. We'll also see that interference is only possible (in the context of this article) if both the object and reference waves come from a single source of illumination.
Holographic interferometry, which appeared a few years later and gave holography a real start in industry, is studied in article [AF 3 345] of this treatise.
