1. Definitions and regulatory aspects

Defining sun protection products (SPPs) is no easy task, if only because the regulatory status of this type of product is quite varied. When the Agence nationale de sécurité du médicament et des produits de santé (Ansm) was still called Agence française de sécurité sanitaire des produits de santé (AFSSaPS), a very general definition was proposed:

"Cosmetic products designed to protect against ultraviolet (UV) radiation are called sun protection products. They must provide combined protection against UVB and UVA rays to claim this designation." .
