ABSTRACT

This article reviews work on the application of paints and analogous coatings to various building materials, both indoors and outdoors. Besides proper execution of the work itself, the professional is concerned by the quality of the supports, which must meet minimal standards, and by the conditions in which the work is carried out, which must be favorable. These considerations are addressed here.

 INTRODUCTION

Paints and related coatings are formulated in extremely variable ways, depending on their intended use. Their application will therefore be specific to each case.

Nevertheless, the work involved in applying the various processes is all covered by AFNOR standardized procedures:

  • DTU 59.1: Decorative paints and coatings (walls, ceilings, interior, exterior, all materials) ;

  • DTU 59.3: Floor paints ;

  • DTU 42.1: Facade waterproofing ;

  • SEL professional rules: liquid waterproofing systems (balcony floors, loggias, passageways, steps, etc.);

  • professional rules for the maintenance and renovation of external thermal insulation systems (ETICS: isolation thermique extérieure: abbreviation of External Thermal Insulation Composite System).

This article presents paint systems adapted to the type of substrate encountered, the pathologies of these substrates and the expected function of the complexes.

It specifies the minimum requirements for substrates and the conditions under which work is to be carried out. It defines the nature of the work to be carried out (preparatory work, priming, finishing) and specifies the composition of the systems to be used.

Some of the most frequent disorders observed on coatings are discussed, with an analysis of their origin.
