6. Conclusion and outlook

While the deleterious effects of sunlight, pollution, smoking and stress on the skin have long been recognized, the damage caused by blue light was only highlighted in the 2000s. Blue light is a portion of the light spectrum naturally emitted by the sun, but in the digital age, the main sources of these wavelengths are artificial lighting: LED bulbs, smartphone screens, tablets, televisions, computers, etc., to which people are exposed for an average of 6 hours a day.

Excessive exposure to blue light has harmful consequences for our vision, sleep quality and, consequently, our mood. Our skin is not spared: it is directly impacted by the oxidative stress induced by this high-energy radiation. The ROS/ERA generated by exposure to blue light specifically attack nucleic acids and proteins, promoting skin aging, pigmentation spots and hyperpigmentation.
