6. Security

Hydrogen has been used for many years in the chemical industry. Hydrogen safety issues in this industrial context are therefore well known and under control. On the other hand, the future use of hydrogen for energy purposes such as transport or cogeneration raises new safety issues that need to be taken into account.

6.1 Hydrogen specificity

The specifics of hydrogen were mentioned at the beginning of this article. Hydrogen is a colorless, non-toxic gas, but it is flammable, with a high risk of leakage, and must therefore be handled and stored with care. In addition to these physico-chemical characteristics, hydrogen does not necessarily have a good reputation among the general public from a safety point of view.
