1.1 What is a catalyst?
A catalyst is a substance, solid, liquid or gas, which increases the speed of a chemical reaction without appearing in the final products.
Figures 1 and 2 show two reaction examples:
the first mono-molecular, isomerization of A into B,
the second is bimolecular, with the addition of A and B leading to two products, C and D,
that the catalyst opens up a new, easier path than stoichiometric (non-catalytic) transformations....
