
1. Preparation of polyfunctionalized organometallic species
An organometallic compound has a more or less polarized carbon-metal bond. The more ionic the carbon-metal bond, the more reactive it is to electrophiles (E + ). On the other hand, the more covalent the carbon-metal bond, the more inert it will be to electrophiles, and consequently the more functional groups are tolerated in these organometallic species.
In practice, C-Mg and especially C-Zn bonds are compatible with a large number of functional groups, and efficient and general synthesis methods have been developed since the late 80s.
