1. From multicore processors to manycores

Multi-core processors are discussed in detail in [H 1 090] . Since the first dual-core processor in 2001 (IBM's Power4), they have established themselves as the only solution for further improving performance while maintaining energy dissipation compatible with conventional packaging and cooling techniques. In 2018, most general-purpose processors (PCs and servers) or mobile systems (smartphones) are multicore.
