One might think that the large number of cores is what characterizes manycore architectures in the first place. In fact, the structure and complexity of the cores must be taken into account.

Processors with by far the highest number of cores are graphics processing units (GPUs). For example, NVidia's Tesla V100 GPU available since 2017 has 5,120 cores. While some characterize GPUs as manycores, this is highly debatable. In fact, GPU cores are the result of the evolution of graphics processors since they became fully programmable (see [H 1 013] ).
