Overview
ABSTRACT
Space perception is given by the three-dimensional field of view situated in front of the observer. This field of vision is frontal and is characterized by the dimension and the position relative to the objects composing it. The visual system transmits information which allows the brain to evaluate the coordinates of the objects concerning width, height and depth, and their respective positions in the field of vision. Within the two-dimensional representations, the perspective can be preserved notably due to the presence of in-depth information, also known as “depth indicators”. The principles of depth indicators are the convergence and the parallax on the one hand and the pictorial indicators on the other. The pictorial indicators include perspectives (linear, chromatic, gradients of texture and distribution), the interposition, the lighting, the decrease of the size and the height in the field of vision.

INTRODUCTION
Most of the articles in the "Image and Sound" section of Techniques de l'Ingénieur deal with technical and technological developments relating to the principles and applications of systems for capturing, storing, processing or reproducing images and sound. It goes without saying that each of these processes finds its justification only at the end of the chain, which is the viewing and hearing of audio-visual documents.
The initial aim of a dossier on the perception of space was :
an inventory of sensory and cognitive variables related to the perception of sounds and images;
harmonization of the presentation of perceptual modes in all articles dealing with this subject;
a reduction and refocusing of technical contributions relating to the audiovisual sector.
It should be noted that a simple "Introduction to modes of spatial perception induced by image and sound" would have been sufficient to meet such objectives. However, the addition of the notion of immersion is necessary, if only to give this perception of space a more creative dimension. To speak of immersion is to implicitly recognize the quality of a rendition. This quality is inseparable not only from the level of technical sophistication (high definition, 3D, multi-track, multi-channel, etc.), but also from artistic quality. Is it not the primary quality of a musical recording to give the listener the impression of being immersed in a concert hall?
