1. Background on MPLS

1.1 MPLS

MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) is a packet switching technology defined by the IETF [ RFC 3031 ]. At the entrance to the MPLS network, a packet is encapsulated in MPLS by the addition of a small 32-bit header (four bytes) [ RFC 3032 ]. The figure 1 illustrates the encapsulation of an IP packet in an MPLS header, but MPLS can encapsulate any type of packet, hence the name "Multi-Protocol".
