In 1979, the CCITT (Comité Consultatif International Télégraphique et Téléphonique) defined facsimile as "a system of telegraphy which ensures the transmission of still images (photographic or other) by means of a scanning process". The reproduction may comprise only two significant states, black and white, or a continuous range of grays, or a continuous range of colors.
