
2. Main IEEE 802.11 amendments
Some amendments were strongly supported by manufacturers of wireless cards and access points. These include amendments b, a and g. The most popular wireless cards sold in France are probably 802.11b/g cards.
2.1 IEEE 802.11b: towards 11 Mbit/s throughput
This amendment was published at the end of 1999. It proposes an extension to one of the physical layers defined in the IEEE 802.11-1999 standard in the 2.4 GHz frequency band. The extension, called HR/DSSS (High Rate Direct Spread Sequence Spectrum), is defined for the DSSS physical layer proposed in 802.11-1999.
