Overview
ABSTRACT
The aim of this article is to deliver, to the readers of the ?Microwave Photonics' serie, a state of the art of the commercially available optoelectronic components and functions for microwave applications. All the main components will be analyzed: CW and directly modulated laser sources, external modulators, filtering functions such as wavelength division multiplexing and demultiplexing, optical fibres and amplifiers and photodetectors will be addressed in order to give the element to build up more complex functions as optical links and optical switching architectures.

INTRODUCTION
The aim of this article is to provide readers of the optoelectronics-microwave series with a survey of the main optoelectronic components and functions for microwave applications that are commercially available. The main industrial players in the field of optoelectronic-microwave components and devices are located in Europe (Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, the UK and France), North America (USA and Canada) and South-East Asia (Japan, South Korea, China and Singapore).
The components needed to implement optical processing functions for analog microwave signals will be listed, and their main characteristics and performance will be compared. The different types of components and devices reviewed include continuous wave (CW) and direct modulated laser sources, external modulators (electro-optical and electro-absorption), filtering functions such as wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer technologies, optical fibers, solid-state optical amplifiers and ultra-fast photodetectors. These components and devices serve as building blocks for more complex functions, such as multiplexed optical links and optical switching architectures.
This analysis does not claim to be exhaustive. Its aim is to provide engineers with a list of components and devices with their main performances, by extracting a few critical parameters from each of the components and devices used in optoelectronic-microwave systems.
